As the skin ages, deep creases form around the mouth, folds appear in the neck and the jawline loses its definition. Surgery will not stop this process but it is able to “remove a few years” by tightening the skin and underlying muscles and removing excess fat from under the skin.
The incisions will usually begin at the temples (in the hair) and extend down to your ear, behind the earlobe and around the back into the scalp. They are well concealed and usually heal with almost no detectable scarring. The final result is usually very similar to the appearance one enjoyed 15 years ago.
The facelift is frequently combined with eyelid lifts, forehead lifts, laserbrasion of the lips /eyelids /forehead, as well as plastic surgery on other areas of the body. This procedure takes around three hours and is done with either I.V.sedation or general anesthesia. Insurance will not cover this procedure as it is considered completely cosmetic in nature. Usually patients will go to a private overnight care facility for the first night after surgery. Drains may be used, but they are usually removed the next day as are the dressings. Bruising and swelling are to be expected. Medication will control the minimal pain and discomfort that patients usually experience. Plan on not being able to drive for two weeks and on being out of work for a full 2-3 weeks. Exercise also needs to be curtailed for a full 2-3 weeks.
